Raw Apricot Kernels Pose Risk Of Cyanide Poisoning, Warns EFSA

One of the popular summer fruits, apricot is a rich source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The benefits of apricot kernel have been the subject of much debate. Eating more than three small raw apricot kernels, or less than half of one large kernel can be toxic to adults while consuming even one small apricot kernel can be fatal for toddlers, warns the European Food Safety Authority.

Apricot kernels contain a naturally-occurring compound called amygdalin, which upon ingestions gets converted to cyanide. Studies have shown that 0.5 to 3.5 milligrams (mg) cyanide per kilogram of body weight can be lethal. Therefore, consumption of more than three small apricot kernels (370mg) by adults and even one small apricot kernel by toddlers will fall in the lethal dose range, say EFSA's experts.
